The Nose - Nikolai Gogol's beloved tale of civil servant Major Kovalyov waking up one morning to discover his nose has left his face and is living a life of its own. Much of the story's humor focuses on the prevailing preoccupation with social rank within the Russia of the time.

This mundane event is interrupted by Yakovlevich's discovery of a nose baked into the loaf. To his horror, he recognizes the nose: it belongs to one of his regular customers, Major Kovalev. Gogol uses caricature, making something small—the nose—disproportionately large, exaggerating it by giving it a life of its own. He does it with such style and such conviction that, for a while, we almost believe it.

As his birthdate might suggest, Gogol was never a man to miss an opportunity to joke, and in this essay I pay homage to perhaps his most biting satirical story, THE NOSE—a tale for our times.
